Manufacturing cycle efficiency
Manufacturing cycle efficiency (MCE) is process (value-added) time divided by total manufacturing cycle time, showing what share of production time actually adds value versus waiting, moving or inspecting.
See it move
A batch spends 16.0 hours in the factory, but only 4.0 of those hours is process time that actually transforms the product. The remaining 12.0 hours is inspection, move and queue time. Manufacturing cycle efficiency is 4.0 ÷ 16.0, or 25% — three-quarters of the time is waste.
The formula
Variables
- Manufacturing cycle efficiency
- Process (value-added) time (hours)
- Total manufacturing cycle time (hours)
The share of total cycle time that is genuinely value-added; closer to 1.0 (100%) means less waste from waiting, moving and inspecting.

A batch spends 6 hours in process time, 2 hours in inspection, 4 hours in move time, and 18 hours in queue time. What is the manufacturing cycle efficiency for this batch?
